California to Curb Truck Emissions

New regulations in California for heavy-duty diesel trucks could force a sweeping overhaul of the state's trucking industry and pave the way for similar changes elsewhere.

Study: Calif. Air Pollution Kills More Than Car Crashes
Lowering air pollution in Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley would save more lives annually than ending all motor vehicle fatalities in the two regions, according to a new study.

Update Your Mowing Equipment

Mowers, weed whackers, and blowers do not currently have emission regulations like cars do, so they actually emit more pollution per hour of use! From electric to manual to gasoline, there are several alternatives available to suit everyone's individual lawn care needs.

Go Electric! It's Quiet, Clean and Saves Money

  • Breathe cleaner air instead of exhaust fumes. Each person who switches from a gas mower to electric prevents 70 pounds of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from entering the air each season.
  • The average cost of electricity is only $3 per year!
  • With an electric mower, you'll never have to buy gasoline or refill the tank again.
  • They are much quieter than a gas machine.
  • Electric mowers are available with a cord or without a cord.

Cord Models: There are many benefits to a corded mower. There is never a need to refuel the machine, recharge the battery or hassle with pulling the start cord or fussing with the primer. You will save time and energy. Because the corded models are light weight, you can enjoy the ease of pushing the mower around the yard. Owners of electric corded mowers praise their quiet, light, efficient function and compare mowing the lawn to vacuuming.

Cordless Models: These have many of the same benefits as the corded model, but there is no electrical cord to get in the way. One battery, depending on the model of the machine, will last around 1.2 hours fully charged. Some models come with two batteries so one is recharging while you are mowing. The weight of the machine is more than a corded model because of the attached battery, yet still lighter than a gas mower.

Go Solar Powered!

Free renewable energy and pollution free. These models are built like the cordless electric mowers. They contain a battery that charges from solar panels rather then electricity. They are lighter than gas powered motors, quiet and clean.

How About a Reel Mower?

Zero pollution! These are great for small lawns. The most maintenance these mowers require is blade sharpening every once in a while. There are now even electric reel mowers available.

Another Option?
Goat Try a goat!

This may be the friendliest and most energy efficient mower on the market! Unfortunately, in suburban cities they may not be allowed.

If you don't need another pet and still prefer a gasoline powered mower, there is still something you can do to help...

Update Your Gas Powered Motor

There are cleaner, more energy efficient gas powered mowers and weed whackers available on the market. If you decide to buy gas powered equipment, ask for one that meets the EPA's 2012 standards which improve the machine's ability to control air pollution. The proposed requirements vary depending on the kind of engine or vehicle. Download the EPA's standards here or visit the EPA website.

There is a large difference in the air pollution emitted between a 4-cycle engine and a 2-cycle engine (gas/oil mix). The 4-cycle engine emits half the pollution so it is better for the environment.
