Impending Changes Related to Indoor Air Quality

Recently, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) created a new Bureau of Environmental Health (BEH) in their Division of Health and transferred some program elements to the new Bureau from the existing Bureau of Air and Radiation (BAR) in the Division of Environment.  In doing so, certain activities that had been addressed by BAR will now be addressed by BEH.  These include indoor air topics such as asbestos, mold, and radon.  The Bureau of Air and Radiation has been renamed as the Bureau of Air (BOA). Currently, the Johnson County Environmental Department (JCED) operates under a contract with the BOA to address indoor air activities, but due to scarce state funding resources, will stop receiving funds from KDHE to provide these services at the county level. BEH will do their best to help citizens with indoor air quality issues while investigating the potential for restoring local funding at some point in the future when the economic climate improves.

As a result of these changes, effective October 1, 2009, our office will no longer be able to provide staff to answer questions or inquiries related to mold, radon, asbestos, and other indoor air issues. We will maintain and periodically update this website to provide general information about indoor air issues as well as contact information at BEH for further follow-up as needed.

BEH may be reached at the following address and phone numbers:
