Johnson County's Green Activities
Johnson County is leading by example in setting high standards in environmental friendly and
energy efficient buildings and steadily replacing its gasoline operation automotive fleet with
more energy efficient vehicles.
Buildings
The new offices in Olathe on Sunset Drive are Gold Standard LEED
certified. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the nationally recognized
green building standard rating system for the design, construction, and operation of high
performance green buildings. The building houses the Environmental, Wastewater, Appraiser's,
MedAct, and Human Services and Aging Departments.
The Sunset Office Building has a list of environmental friendly and energy efficient amenities
and a growing list of awards. |
|
 |
- The building is 40% more energy efficient than other buildings of its size and function.
- It uses native plants for the landscape to eliminate the need to water as well as the
ability to absorb rainwater runoff from the parking lots.
- An effort to use local construction materials was made to eliminate the distance traveled
for supplies.
- All of the cleaning supplies are environmentally friendly.
- Natural daylight is used to enhance the performance of the heating/cooling and increase
employee performance.
- This is only a portion of the list. More can be found on the
Johnson County Facilities website.
There is also the new County Communications Center being constructed that is anticipated
to be LEED certified. It will bring several public safety dispatch centers into one facility
and is expected to operational by late 2008.
Automotive Fleet
The county strives to use environmental efficient vehicles. Within the entire county
fleet, at approximately 788 vehicles, 38 are gasoline/electric hybrids, and 135 are flex-fuel
(E85 compatible) vehicles.
